History
of Tobacco
The
tobacco is an indigenous plant of Antillean origin, and its scientific
name comes of (Nicotina Tabacum). The first news on the existence of the
tobacco appear in Columbus's Diary, where the text of historical
truthfulness expressed that between the November 2nd. and 5th.
of 1492, the Spaniards in the Cuban coast, met the first plant of tobacco.
Starting from November 6th, of that same year began the habit
of using tobacco with medicinal functions and illnesses that the Spaniards
were suffering.
Among
them could be pointed out:

The
use of bandages of green leaves of tobacco semi-cooked to treat the
headache.

The
placement of green leaves in the abdomen to expel parasites out of
the children.

Also,
tobacco was used to stop the hemorrhages in the wounds and to
prevent the astonishment (tetanus). |
The
natives from the Antilles called the pipe tobacco and ritual ceremonies
and mixed them with other hallucinogenic substances.
The
use of tobacco by the aboriginal was also intimately related with its
activities of religious character
The
first Europeans that made contact with tobacco were Spaniards that
Columbus sent to explore the interior of Cuba island, these people were
Rodrígo de Jerez and Luis Torres. They traveled the banks of the river
along the Banks of Caunao river in Cuba.
Seeds
of the tobacco plant (the natives called this planta “cohiba”), were taken to Spain in 1492 sent by Fray Ramón Pané to
Carlos V from La Hispaniola.
The
first tobacco factory in Seville, Spain, was installed in 1763, with
tobacco sent from Santo Domingo.

Cultivation
of Tobacco
The cultivation of
tobacco requires for its best development, fertile and flat earth and
moderate rains. They also need to use certain techniques to achieve a
maximum of productivity and a better quality in the product.
Traditionally
the tobacco is planted in the period of November to January, after the big
rains that begin in September.
The
peasant relates the plantation of the tobacco with the cycle of the moon
and the parties of religious character. That is to say that if the
plantation of the tobacco coincides with this parties and with the new
moon and the moderate rains, one presumes that there will be a good crop.
The
gathering of the leaves of the tobacco is done more or less at four months
of the growth. After being gathered they are smoothed and are in threads
and placed in the ranches for the drying of the tobacco.
The
main Center of Production of the Tobacco of the Dominican Republic. It is
located in the region of the Cibao, where the most fertile earth exists
for the cultivation of this aromatic leaf and the cigarettes of higher
quality of the world are manufactured.
Our
main countries of export of the tobacco are: United States, Belgium,
France, Germany, England, Spain, Morocco and Puerto Rico, which consume
the tobacco of the Dominican Republic for the great satisfaction that any
one feels when testing the excellence of our product
